The Laurel Knight Hawks Track & Field program was founded in December 2017 by Lane Flynt and Ben Flynt. The first team was small, consisting of just a handful of student-athletes from the Jenkins, Wheat, Fenton, Spradley, and Hayden families. By the following year, the program had gained momentum and grown to approximately 20 athletes, welcoming members of the Beech, Pitts, Cranford, and Goodwin families. The next season, participation expanded to nearly 45 athletes, adding the Pierce, Roberts, and Lilley families, among many others. In those early years, we did not have state-of-the-art facilities or specialized equipment. Practices were held wherever space could be found—around the parking lot of Magnolia Baptist Church, the Sportsplex parking lot, and the cemetery loop at Lane’s church. Our “jumping pits” consisted of fill dirt that had been placed into two shallow pits behind the church. We spray-painted running lanes on the ground and used homemade concrete takeoff boards for long jump. For high jump, we relied on a few old mattresses covered with a tarp, with a metal bar supported by volleyball poles. One of our most memorable practice locations was Gardiner Park. It was truly a grassroots effort, but it got the job done. Despite our humble beginnings, our athletes competed hard and found success, winning events and building a foundation for the future. Like many programs, we faced challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2020 season was cut short, leaving us with only half a season of competition. In 2021, we regrouped and began rebuilding. Coach Eric Roberts joined the program in late 2021 for the 2022 season. He and Coach Lane worked together that year before she officially passed the baton to him at the end of the season. Over the years, Knight Hawks Track & Field continued to grow, reaching a peak enrollment of more than 100 athletes, including approximately 45 elementary-aged participants. Since then, the program has earned numerous championships, awards, and MSAHA Conference records—many of which still stand today. The success of Knight Hawks Track & Field has never been the result of coaches alone. Behind the scenes, countless parents, volunteers, and supporters have invested their time and talents to make this program possible. From administrative work and meet operations to transportation and encouragement, this team has always been powered by a dedicated community. We are deeply grateful to everyone who has contributed to the mission of providing young athletes with a competitive, Christ-centered environment where they can grow, find community, and pursue excellence. The Christian running community that has developed through Knight Hawks Track & Field is one of our greatest treasures. We look forward to continuing that legacy for many years to come.
